It was only 2 years as a General or Advanced Class before you could take the Amateur Extra Class examination. Those with Technician Class or Conditional Class could not take the examination until they had held a General Class for 2 years. Then this was reduced to 1 year and finally to no time at all. Remember that before 22 November 1967 that the Advanced Class was not available having been the reclassification of those who held the old Class "A" licenses before 1952 when the new classifications came into being. The old Class "B" became General Class and the old Class "C" became Conditional Class.

You did have to hold any class of license for at least 25 years before you could apply for a 2 letter call as an Amateur Extra Class operator before the start of the vanity program. Of course the first "round" of vanity was several years before the real vanity program started where in all could apply for calls of their choice.

When you renewed your license you used to have to certify (but not actually provide proof unless requested) that you had operated a minimum of 2 hours within the past 6 months or 5 hours within the past year. Of course you were required to keep a written log during that time period.

Lets not forget, way back when "Hector was a pup", you had to show proof, in a log how long you were on and also had to have the "general class" for five years before you could even take the extra class. Ah yes, the old Hartley oscillator drawing, remember it well. Nowa days, ask a newbie if its capacitor input filter or choke, they stand there, scratching there head and why is that tube called a triode. Just shooting my mouth of.
