Ok, I will add my two cents worth:

I also took my General exam at the FCC office in Denver in 1953 and passed 
the first time. I had no trouble with the CW portion, as I had learned code 
in High School radio class the year before.

I also agree that the CW test should not have been eliminated ~ yes, some 
think that it is a out-dated mode, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

You CAN copy a CW signal in very poor band condx where perhaps you can not 
copy another type of signal.

To me, if you want something bad enough you will do whatever it takes to get 
the job done, IE Learn code! And yes, it does take a bit of intelligence to 
become more than just a "Appliance Operator"!
