Ray,

Most (if not all) receivers with a Send/Receive switch have a terminal strip
or jack connected to the switch terminals where you can connect external
contacts like a remote Send/Receive switch or a relay contacts from your
transmitter or external antenna relay connected and controlled from either
the transmitter or an external switch. Usually you keep the switch on the
receiver on Send (open circuit) and on receive the external contact is in
the closed position.

When transmitting, the external contact opens, and the receiver mutes.

If the Send/Receive switch is not connected to a external contacts on the
receiver rear panel, you can simply add a two-terminal jack or screw
terminals to the rear panel or flying lead, and connect it to the switch
terminals. Make sure the insulation is rated the voltage on the switch…

Subject: [Boatanchors] Receiver muting

I'm pairing up some transmitters with the Hammarlund series of receivers
like the HQ 145 and HQ 170.
Hammarlund never included any kind of "muting" provision in their receivers,
other than the receive/send rotary switch
on the panel. This means that it becomes a two step procedure to go from
transmit to receive. Put the receiver switch into
the "send" position and then throw the plate or transmit switch on the
transmitter to activate the antenna relay, then
vice versa when going to receive.

I'm an old timer ham of almost 40 years, but I am interested in what some of
you other old timers did back then.
Or, did you just do the old two step dance like I did when I was a Novice?
