[Boatanchors] Receiver muting

My first station in the 50's was more complex.
I had a HB 6AG7/807 MOPA built from a 50's ARRL Handbook. It had a toggle switch to turn on the HV.
The receiver was a S-38 that had been RE-KITTED. I had to reassemble it and make it work. It had the normal rec/stby switch.
For the antenna I had a ceramic DPDT KNIFE SWITCH. The antenna was a folded dipole made from TV twinlead.
To go to transmit I had to switch the Rx to STBY, move the knife switch to the transmitter position, then turn on the Tx HV. To go back to receive I had to do all this in reverse.
NO QSK! I didn't have SIDETONE either!

I'm pairing up some transmitters with the Hammarlund series of receivers like the HQ 145 and HQ 170.
Hammarlund never included any kind of "muting" provision in their receivers, other than the receive/send rotary switch
on the panel. This means that it becomes a two step procedure to go from transmit to receive. Put the receiver switch into
the "send" position and then throw the plate or transmit switch on the transmitter to activate the antenna relay, then
vice versa when going to receive.
I'm an old timer ham of almost 40 years, but I am interested in what some of you other old timers did back then.
Or, did you just do the old two step dance like I did when I was a Novice?
