[Boatanchors] Receiver muting

Hi Ray,

If you want the "ultimate" in send/recieve switching, I have used it for about 30 years back from mid 50's to mid 80's.
It requires the use of an electronic T/R switch and a small, easily made modification to the boatanchor receiver.
The grounded end of the AVC bus has to be lifted and brought out to an external small stdt relay and another r.f. gain
control.
The circuit schematic and description is described in an article in "Hints & Kinks" in August 1967 QST. This is a
revision of the original circuit that appeared in an ARRL Handbook, the edition I don't recall but it was one before the mid
50's.
The revised circuit was an improvement to the original.
The additional r.f. gain control makes possible controlling the strength of your monitor while working CW and used to
mute the receiver while working Phone. It varies the gain of the receiver when key is down from Mute to as loud as you
want to hear your CW signal.
When key is up, the reciever's own r.f. gain control controls the gain of the receiver.

I can assure you Ray, you will be amazed, smooth as silk, no snaps, pops, grunts, groans, nothing! Incredibily smooth!
And, you will hear the signals on the band where you are, in between dots & dashes - your own signal will sound like a
distant signal, only steady with no fading, etc.
I use a Johnson T/R switch, the one with a 6BL7 gate and a 6X4 rectifier. I am planning to remove the rectifier from the
cabinet because it creates much heat. I will bring in filament and B+ from an external source.
My boatanchor station consists of a Central Electronics 100V, 600L linear, HQ-129-X, Johnson electronic T/R switch,
T.M.C.GSB-1 SSB Adapter and a Philco 3" Service Scope with which I can watch incoming signals as well as my
outgoing signals.
My 100V and 600L have both been restored by an expert.
There are additional features which I have incorporated which I will describe if you would like to hear them.
Good luck,

Ken N5CM

I'm pairing up some transmitters with the Hammarlund series of receivers like the HQ 145 and HQ 170.
Hammarlund never included any kind of "muting" provision in their receivers, other than the receive/send rotary switch
on the panel. This means that it becomes a two step procedure to go from transmit to receive. Put the receiver switch into
the "send" position and then throw the plate or transmit switch on the transmitter to activate the antenna relay, then
vice versa when going to receive.

I'm an old timer ham of almost 40 years, but I am interested in what some of you other old timers did back then.
Or, did you just do the old two step dance like I did when I was a Novice?
