I had this experience which is the opposite of the poor Heathkit and 
Johnson paint jobs.

I have a Breting 12 that was painted blue when I got it 10 years ago. I 
decided to try a model railroad trick which was to strip the blue paint 
off with brake fluid. This was often used to strip plastic and brass 
models that were I screwed up when air brush painting and wanted to do 
over. The brake fluid in most cases would not harm the plastic.

The brake fluid took off the blue paint on the Breting with no problem. 
The surprise was that it did not harm the original paint which had been 
put on in the mid 1930's. I ended up not having to repaint the receiver.
