Hi Drew,

This splitting is a common problem with the older Hallicrafters meters. 
Unless you want the receiver to look original, the easiest fix I have found is a 
stainless radiator hose clamp.  They come in many sizes and will do the job.  
Otherwise, hobby shops sell brass sheets in many thicknesses to accomplish the 
fix you described.
