Common practice for many manufacturers (Collins and Hammarlund come to
mind) was to paint the panel completely, then engrave afterwards. This
leads to very shallow engravings in the bare metal panel. I have a
Collins mixing console with paint worn down to the metal around one of
the switches. Engravings are there, but would be difficult to fill if
the entire panel was stripped.
Some manufacturers didn't bother with primer since the life expectancy
of the equipment wasn't long-term. Most expected them to be replaced
in a few years with newer technology. No idea what National's thinking
was on their equipment, Carl could perhaps shed some light on that.
