[Boatanchors] "Re-engraving" panel markings

While in the process of restoring the cabinet on my National HFS I found 
that after putting on the primer coat the engraved panel markings all but 
disappeared!
(DUH! They were filled with primer)

Is there a preferred method to restore the engravings? They are not very 
deep into the metal and they are very small, so they are filled when it is 
painted.
Re-scribing is not a good option for me as my 73 year old eyes and hands are 
not what they used to be. . . .
Any help/suggestions will be appreciated!
