You can do a smooth fade, provided it's not tooooo slooooooow. I have
an old Collins 212A console from the late 40s, and used a 212B in a
station where I used to announce. I never had issues with fade out or
in. Human hearing may have a bit to do with it also.

Those Daven attenuators are nice stuff, Bob. They have a devoted
following in the audio world. Easy to service for the occasional
cleaning, too. Not sure if or where they were used in amateur service,
due to cost. Maybe some of their smaller models.
