I've seen detented pots much like that used in (then) high-$ and high-
precision mixing boards in recording studios, back in the 1960s. I 
remember very vividly a friend's disappointment that there was no way
for the recording studio to do a _smooth_ fade down to zero at the end 
of one of his sample tapes. This was, of course, pretty much in the 
stone-knives-and-bearskins days. We've come a long, long way since 
then.
