This discussion keeps recurring, and we need real statistical data to 
end it!  I've heard horror stories about UPS, USPS, Fedex, DHL, etc. as 
well as those who swear by a particular carrier.  This is what is called 
'anecdotal evidence' and can't be relied upon.  We need a real study 
based on a large enough sample to be statistically valid.

I'm sure big companies that ship tens of thousands of items a day have 
done this.  Of course, they are interested in minimizing overall cost 
rather than number of lost or damaged items, so it's not enough to just 
note that Dell Computers, for example, uses UPS.  Their raw data would 
be interesting, but I guess that's as big a secret as statistics on 
which doctors kill the most patients!
