The ceramic disc capacitor looking device is called an
MOV, Metal Oxide Varistor. You are correct in that
they make several different types by AC voltage
rating. The more popular ones were about 130 to 150
VAC rating to limit the initial power up 120 VAC line
surge.

I worked for Electronic Parts Co. in Albuquerque, NM
for sixteen years, then four years at The Shack. They
have a multitude of uses as you can imagine for old
vacuum tube type radios, TV's, etc.
