[Boatanchors] Ground Rod

YVA's monster hammer drill is great, but a bit of overkill, I think.  A 
regular hammer drill (rented, borrowed, or whatever) with a chuck of sufficient 
size to fit the ground rod has worked well for me and will usually allow the rod 
to either break up the underground rocks or to slide past them.  Just connect 
the hammer drill to the rod, stand on a stepladder to get started (it's 
helpful to have someone steady the rod for you and keep it vertical), and it will 
usually go right down to 8 feet easily. 

If you hit a huge rock that won't allow further depth, just cut off the rod 
and use what's already in the ground.  If you wish, go to some convenient point 
which is 1/2 the rod length away horizontally and sink another one, them 
connect them together with heavy braid.
