I imagine this is such a well known no-brainer that everyone will say 
duh when they read it.  But telling it anyway is what keeps no-brain 
guys like me busy.

If your going to use the brass-type ground clamp that completely 
surrounds the rod and tightens with a set screw, slip it on the rod 
before you start hammering on it (if hammering is necessary - it always 
seems like it is around my qth).  I find the the mushroom that developes 
on the end of the rod usually gets out to a diameter big enough that the 
clamp won't slip over it.  I had to file the mushroom off of a rod once. 
Down there about three inches above the mud.  I like it better the other 
way.
