One way to do it in bad earth is get a piece of 3/4" of 1" water pipe about 
8' long. Have one end threaded. Get a water hose to to pipe adaptor. Hook 
water hose to pipe. Put on bathing suit. Turn on water. Start end of pipe 
down into ground. This will wash small rocks etc out of the way. When you 
get it down as far as you want, or as far as you can, get charcoal, salt or 
something conductive and pack into hole around pipe. Somebody out there will 
have an opinion as to what to use. I use salt. You can also run a bit of 
water down the pipe occasionally to help. conduction.
