I would like to thank WB8DML, Jim Dieguez and W5WP, David Paperman for putting
on a terrific forum this morning at the early hour of 8:15 AM EDT at the Dayton
Hamvention.
It was well attended and HCI appreciates all who participated in whatever the
capacity.
Our original speaker had to cancel with little notice, so Jim and I had to take
a few steps back and punt. I had hopes of being there to do it myself, but
conditions beyond my control prevented it from coming to pass. Perhaps next
year. If I had been there and taken up everyone on their most gracious offers of
buying me dinner, I would have had to find somebody to roll me home like a
beachball on tour!
W5WP did a brief discussion of DXing with vintage equipment, as he is a serious
DX'er of long standing. One of the disgusting types - if you worked Christmas
Island with 100 watts and a three element beam, Dave had done it on 5 watts
while connected to the barb wire fence in his backyard! If there is just one
Ham in the country, W5WP will talk to him on some band using some mode
somewhere, somehow. This man has QSL cards from places I did not even know had a
postal service!
Then he devoted the balance of his time to answering technical questions from
those attending the Hallicrafters forum. Something that was greatly appreciated
by everyone. A very special thank you to Dave for stepping up to the plate at
the last second and pinch hitting for us. I only gave him three days advance
notice when I asked him, and he got it done with style and finesse. Thanks Dave
for a job well done!
WB8DML struggled along for several months trying to make the forum happen, in
spite of speakers having to cancel and plans we made changing before the ink on
his note pad got dry. A special thanks to Jim for hanging tough and getting it
done.
Once again, it rained today in Dayton, Ohio. Is this the third year in a row or
the third in four years? It really hurts those with outside booths.
