Hi Greg
That is a cw delay deck, as in sequential keying. The early Rangers did not
have that feature. Later Johnson offered an "update" kit owner could modify
hi rig. If you don't plan on doing cw it wont make much difference. But the
vfo in Rangers, in fact, all Johnsons using that vfo, were "drifty" & cw was
almost a joke because the vfo "chirped". The delay did eliminate the chirp
but not the drift. Much later all Ranger came with that deck in them. And
later still Ranger-II s had another feature built into the vfo to stabilize
the drift, a compensator in the oscillator grid circuit. This was a "must"
because R-IIs feature 6 meters (52 mc) band where drift is a significant
factor.

Subject: [Boatanchors] Johnson Viking Ranger

Hi:

Got a question on the original Johnson Viking Ranger. Not the Ranger II
Is there more than one version of this Ranger?
just now completing a refurbishment on one and am about to place it back in
service.
This is my third Ranger project and I noticed that this particular one does
not have the small, two tube sub-assembly bolted behind the front panel in
front of the rectifiers.
Any input will be appreciated
Greg
