Nowadays the colors used aren't 'pure'.  The red has some yellow in it and the 
green has some blue in it.  So if you are deficient in making red-green 
distinctions (as I am), you can still tell by the yellowish or blueish cast of 
the light.  I think blue-yellow or complete color blindness is much more rare 
than red-green deficiency.
