"Effective January 2, 1957, the "Conerad" rules became part
of the amateur regulations. Essentially, compliance with
the rules consists of monitoring a broadcast station --
standard band, f.m. or TV -- either continuously or at
intervals not exceeding 10 minutes, during periods in which
the amateur transmitter is in use. On receipt of a
Conelrad Alert all transmitting must cease, except as
authorized in 12.193 and 12.194 of the FCC regulations."
I could not find a reference to tell me when the Conelrad
rules were rescinded. My memory seems to think that it was
in the late '60s.. Anyone?
And, it is important to remember that the regulations
applied to all radio services, not just the amateur radio
service. I remember visiting a AM broadcast station in
1959 and checking out their CONELRAD monitor. When the
alert went off, all stations were to cease transmitting
except for designated AM broadcast stations that would
transmit official notices on 640 or 1240 Kc.
