Hi Kurt,
I am writing to you from Italy.

A 5U4 is a very common tube even in Europe, so I think you have not to try
the 5Y3 replacement!

Here in Italy you could find a New Old Stock 5U4 for approx 12,00euro...
upon the web there are sellers in Germany, in France... I am sure you have
one even in Austria!

The power supply transformer, after a shock like the one you have told,
could be irreparably damaged:
you had only to plug in the new 5U4 into its socket, then you could turn on
the switch.

If the transformer smokes again, you will only have to carry it to an
electro-mechanical laboratory for rewiring.
If the transformer goes well as in the past... you are a lucky boy :-)

After all, I suggest to you to check the electrolytic caps...
