[BARC-List] BARC Question of the Week: SlashDot series about HamRadio and disasters

The cause of a tsunami in the Atlantic would be if, and it's a big if, a
volcano in the Canary Islands collapsed during an eruption. This happened
to the North Face of Mt. St. Helens in 1980. If it happens to an island, it
triggers a submarine landslide which will cause a tsunami. This happened at
Krakatoa in 1883- the largest explosion in recorded history- and at the
Greek island of Santorini (Thira). I visited Santorini in 1985 and it is
C-shaped to the west. Some think that the tsunami triggered by its eruption
and collapse was the cause of the "parting of the Red Sea." Most tsunamis
aren't caused undersea eruption, which occur frequently without disaster-
like Surtsey. Most are caused by powerful earthquakes at subdution zones,
such as the west coast of South America and Mexico, the Gulf of Alaska and
the Aleutians, Japan, and Java-Sumatra.
Here in Everett, I'm probably high enough at 18 metres that I would not be
flooded. My biggest concern would be fires from the nearby NG tank farf,
especially if a tanker is offloading at the time.
