[BARC-List] HT antennas - stock vs third-party

Hello to all:

I am wondering what the real difference is, if any, between a stock
antenna of a newly purchased HT, and a third-party rubber duck?  Both
consist of wire to get the signal out and help receive signals.  Is there
anything special an average third-party antenna offers that the stock does
not, or is it simply an incentive for us to spend more money?
