[ARC5] Waking up Command Receivers

I cut 'em, gut 'em, install metal film caps, then solder the pot back together, Looks like it never happened when I'm done.
Other guys put a terminal strip in that spot, others remove the wires and solder the cap to the wire's destination..
All of the above will work, but I like the aesthetics of the original design.

I never repot the caps.  I just replace them with individual capacitors.    Recapping the SCR-274N receivers is straightforward and takes just a few hours time (if you're slow like me.....).

Yes the caps tend to be very leaky. The big ones on the power lines will go dead short all of sudden- even after the radio has been on a while!
If you intend to use the radio, definitely consider re-potting all of the caps. The performance will probably improve also.I use a pipe cutter to make a clean cut, but a hack saw will work too...

I've has less problems with the resistors, but that may depend on how the radio was stored.

I have a couple of power supplies for the AN/ARC-5 and SCR-274N that plug into the dynamotor receptacle and  are powered by 110 volts AC. One was made by the lab at Aircraft Radio Corp and I made the other myself. Reasonably neat construction. I want $50 each plus postage. - Gordon Eliot White, po box 129, Hardyville, VA 23070 804-695-4628

Alternatively, you could just use a 28V dynamotor powered off of a 24 V supply  (or build a 28V linear supply as I did).  28V Supplies are pretty cheap on Amazon (just be sure to bypass the output lines as these are switching supplies).

In Feb 2020, using a stock BC-453B,  I logged 68 NDBs during a weekend listening sprint with the receiver connected to my 160M INV-L antenna.

  Gang,

We all have these things languishing in our collections.  Here's how to use one without building up a complete system.
