The ARC Type 12 is a 1950s - 1960s aircraft radio, used in civilian and some military aircraft, most notably early helicopters. Lest anybody think this radio would fit the bill to install in a period correct WW2 vehicle.

I had a long-ish spline cable from Fair Radio (40 years ago purchase). With a DIY TX control panel and initially a DIY "solid state dynamotor" I got it together and working. The Type 12 works great, sounds better and I think under appreciated...Even if just to monitor the local aircraft comms. We occasionally run an AM net on 144.450 mc with another T-12 and a couple of USMC MAW's.

Using an R-19 and T-13B, I mounted the control box on an extended front panel and connected the two tuning splines via a 1/4" Dia. copper tubing shaft extensions. The control box has to be perfectly aligned axially with the receiver but it worked. The front panel had a speaker, channel switch, and audio Jack's. The bugaboo is trying to form both ends of the tubing to conform with the splines without deforming the tubing. In the end, I had to make two spline adaptors and a shaft coupling in between as I could not get both ends on one piece done without ruining the other. Forming the end of each tube was done with a cannibalized spline end chucked in a vice and tapping it over the spline. Cutting oil helped. I read the old CQ mags of the 40's and 50's and marvel of how plentiful these tuning shafts were... oh well.
