That would work. In fact, there are several articles in various ham mags on how to use those.

There are a couple of things you have to keep in mind though: usually one side of the 
secondary winding is connected to the core.

Secondly, there is a "magnetic shunt" you need to remove, but all it takes is a hammer and a 
screwdriver. It is usually simply wedged in place.
