Yes - thanks for the reminder - now I seem to recall a short lead from the winding to the frame; short, but if careful, enough to lift and
use. I was thinking this would light up a tube like the 814. ( RCAF AT-12 )

>That would work. In fact, there are several articles in various ham mags on how to use those.
There are a couple of things you have to keep in mind though: usually one side of the secondary winding is connected to the core.
Secondly, there is a "magnetic shunt" you need to remove, but all it takes is a hammer and a screwdriver. It is usually simply wedged in place.
