Bob, the mention of adhesive overlays is really interesting to me.
I have an Italian receiver where the dial scale ( quite similar looking in size and geometry to your HB receiver ) has totally flaked off the front 
panel.

In a totally other genre, I also have a Revell Model Company 3-transistor SW radio that the ( presumably young ) assembler glued the dial
scale down crooked.
