[ARC5] ARC-type-12 C-57 (used with R-22)

I'll add that the manually rotated loop listed as used with the R-10 and
R-11, L-10 and L-10A, had a standalone loop control box (to rotate the loop)
but several of the control boxes listed in the 1956 revision of the Type 12
manual, besides having controls for the receiver or receivers, also had the
loop control on the same box. The Console mounted C-57 doesn't have that
control on it. So in order to prove that the R022 was intended for MDF, one
would have to have proof that an aircraft with R-22 on its list of radio
equipment installed also had a loop controller installed. I'll have to
agree with Mike that 1958 is a bit late for USAF to be buying MDF equipment.
I'd be inclined to think that it was more likely intended for entertainment
on VIP aircraft. But in any case, it's strange that they didn't just use
the already available R-10A.

The R-22 has a BNC connection for a loop, so the unit was intended for a
crude RDF role. Since there is no provision for any sort of signal strength
meter, only an aural null with the loop was available.

But that was a very dated RDF method by 1958, and there weren't many
military or civilian radios being built in 1958 using the five loctal and
one octal tubes found in the R-22. The R-22 seems rather anachronistic,
even for 60 years ago.

Just a couple of years later, A.R.C. produced a small capable ADF using
wired-in submini tubes and one transistor...the Type 21 ADF with R-30A
receiver [a.k.a. AN/ARN-59 with R-836/ARN). It is less than half the size
of the very limited R-22.
