The R-22 has a BNC connection for a loop, so the unit was intended for a crude RDF role.  Since there is no provision for any sort of signal strength meter, only an aural null with the loop was available.

But that was a very dated RDF method by 1958, and there weren't many military or civilian radios being built in 1958 using the five loctal and one octal tubes found in the R-22.  The R-22 seems rather anachronistic, even for 60 years ago.

Just a couple of years later, A.R.C. produced a small capable ADF using wired-in submini tubes and one transistor...the Type 21 ADF with R-30A receiver [a.k.a. AN/ARN-59 with R-836/ARN).  It is less than half the size of the very limited R-22.
