I'd bet that the set in question was an AN/ARN-6, which was capable of ADF, RDF, and following Adcock directional beacons.  Some older aircraft in all services used the AN/ARN-6 well into the 1970s...a very popular set from post-WWII.

BTW, the A.R.C. Type 12 gear is unrelated to the AN/ARC-12 UHF-AM ten-channel crystal-controlled set.  Its RT-58/ARC-12 can be installed in the rack of an existing AN/ARC-1 VHF-AM set to convert from VHF to UHF with no other changes except antenna.
