[ARC5] ARC5 Digest, Vol 173, Issue 31

You can use tube gear in contests and use computer logging; that avoids the
paper log and duping process. A memory keyer avoids the glass arm.
That’s a nice way to do vintage contesting. Of course if your
transmitter and receiver doesn’t have a transceive function the workload
goes up significantly and, in my opinion, it’s no long fun. I did this for
quite a few years when I owned my completely decked out Drake C Line. I
am still kicking myself for selling those radios…..
You can take computer integration to various levels. Our club station is
fully integrated with web spotting. New mults show up in the dialog
box. I click on the spot and the transceiver goes to the spotted
frequency. I push a “button” on the display and squirt out our call,
then push another button to send the exchange. Push yet another button
and I’m back to where I was. It’s the way of modern contesting.
I’ve lamented it’s kind of like shooting fish in a barrel, and I really
wish the contest organizers would allow multi-single non-assisted entries;
most only allow multi-single assisted. But I’m a bit of a dinosaur……
One of the drawbacks of modern radios is, as has been pointed out, custom
chips that will eventually go end of life. Hams are used to radios that
last a long time; the end of life time for these custom parts is a lot
less. So, the big contesters will not be using radios that are very old.
It’s the same for all the electronics in our cars. I wonder what the
agreed upon end of life time is for a car produced in recent years, between
manufacturers and suppliers. I’m used to keeping cars until they are
driven to the junk yard. I just bought a new 2018 and I doubt I’ll be
able to do that. I think the introduction of all this in-vehicle
electronics will be causing a fundamental shift in the used car market.
Same for the used ham market, but on a smaller scale.
