Skip,

My guess, as 6 KC is a bit much, is that it does not have its original coil 
rack.  What you could do, although it will be somewhat time consuming, is 
to find another coil rack (preferably a damaged one and for sure not a 
540-1500 one) and drill out the rivets so that you can have loose cans.  

Pull the coils out of the cans on the rack for your receiver, and plug them 
into the receiver individually.  Put the loose cans on over the coils and 
confirm that the receiver still works.  Then pull the can off of the 
oscillator coil and make a slight adjustment.  Put the can back on and see how much 
you moved it.  Repeat all afternoon.  :-)
