Hi, Cliff:
That "clear finish" MAY be MFP (Moisture Fungus Proofing) which the military applied. If so,
it will have a yellowish "cast" to the color.
If it is MFP, it is extremely difficult to remove. Furthermore, since one of its main
constituents was formaldehyde, it is somewhat toxic under some circumstances.
As one of our members, I believe it was Jack Antonio, pointed out to me, there is a product
named "Aircraft Paint Remover", which may do the job (I have not yet used any of the can
which I bought recently.).
Aircraft Paint Remover is available at any decent auto parts store. I got mine at Auto Zone.
And the directions on it specifically say, "Not for use on aircraft". :-)
The directions for using the stuff are quite clear, and it will not damage aluminum.
