[ARC5] Refurbishing a Whatzit

A friend gave me two ATA transmitter chassis.  One is the usual wreck but
still a transmitter.  The other is re-purposed, apparently as a power
supply.  The front has a large meter and a single potentiometer with an
on-off switch.  The internals are a transformer and three tubes.  Out of
the rear, a cable with a two conductor plug.

My question is how to clean off the exterior of this chassis - it appears
to have had a clear finish applied which is about 50% worn away.  Are there
any precautions on removing finishes from the aluminum - products not to be
used?
