[ARC5] Replacement FT-230As?

The problem with making new FT-230's is that I have found that all too often they yanked the internal box with the plug on it out of the radio also in order to put in local controls.

Now why they could not have just taken an FT-230, installed the switches and phone jack in it, and wired it all to the correct pins on the rear socket, I have no idea.  It would have been far less trouble to do it that way than the typical rape job.

In any case, both the FT-230 and the internal box are deep drawn aluminum and that ain't easy, not generally done by the kind of place that makes air conditioning ducts and the like.  You could bend up some aluminum and rivet it together easily enough, but it would not look the same.  

Many years ago a friend of mine asked a local Air Cond shop if he could use their metal duct making equipment to make some cowling parts for his antique airplane.  The response was, "Sure, but you have to clean up all the blood."  He soon found out why they added that stipulation...
