[ARC5] AM and SSB Use

I recall back in the late 60's one night we tuned in an HF AM signal from a USCG Cutter in the Gulf of Mexico on our GE multiband portable.

The cutter had been sent to look for a boat in distress.  It was winter and the weather was rough.  The captain of the USCG cutter had come down with pneumonia and was gravely ill.  The cutter crew was asking to return to port right away because otherwise their captain might die.

I am surprised that they were using AM for HF comm in the late 60's.  I believe that SAC went to SSB in the mid-50's.
