The capacitor you are referring to is probably C-30. In an unmodified
R-23 or R-24 it is a coupling cap that passes audio from the cathode
of the output tube, to pin 4 of the front panel plug. This was to
support an ILS system that saw little use.
In these two receivers, the 12A6 is being used as a cathode follower,
in addition to its normal role of driving the headphone lines.
This was only done in the AN/ARC-5 receivers, not the SCR-274N
or ARA.
If one side of C-30 is grounded, it is probably one of the mods
done by a previous owner.
