W.E. produced a pile of Bell Labs designed commercial aircraft equipment 
during the 1930s, including the 50 watt WE-13C transmitter that Amelia 
was alleged to have carried on the flight.  From Myron Eddy's 1939 book 
_Aeronautic Radio_:  "Western Electric radio equipment of one kind or 
another is in use on most of the major airlines and many of their 
connecting lines where modifications have in some cases been 
successfully incorporated."  The WE-13C is described in Terman's 
textbook dated 1937, including photographs. It reminds me of a portable 
electric bathroom heater... :-)   I got so many questions about it from 
the Tighar folks that I finally just put all the info into a pdf and 
posted it at
