Wayne told me, in an E-Mail a year, or so, ago, that towards the end of 73-Magazine, the office manager was writing cheques to herself and marking the "books" that the author had been paid. Virtually all of the articles that I had published in 73 were paid upon acceptance. Towards the end, payment came when the article was published. There was one article for which I never received payment.
CQ Magazine was infamous for very slow pay and even no pay. I ceased writing the FM Column when they got about $1000 behind in payment. CQ never paid me the amount. However, in some ways, I got revenge. When I stopped writing the column, a number of full-page and half-page advertisers immediately cancelled their ads. The Cowans could have paid me with just one month's payment for a single full-page advertisement. As such, they lost a LOT of money because they failed to pay a relatively small amount! When the Cowan family sold CQ, it was hoped that things would improve. I haven't written anything for CQ since the magazine changed owners. However, I have heard through the "grape vine", that payment is still pretty slow at times, at least to some authors. But, since I do not have any personal experience, I cannot say that this is absolutely true.
I never got paid for an article that was published in Ham Radio Magazine just before CQ bought the magazine. I attribute that to the CQ staff.

I only published twenty notes and/or articles in 73 and four in
Microcomputing. In the beginning, Wayne would always pay on acceptance. In
the end, it was only through Joyce's help that I was paid.
