It wasn't the fact that the Cowans didn't have the money to pay the authors! During the fall of 1971, I represented CQ at a hamvention in Boston. Dick Cowan was there. He took me out to dinner and spent well over $300 at a particular restaurant and there was no alcohol involved!

Wayne Green bought my second Command set article, starting me on my way to a dozen years' workon them, after Western Radio Amateur published one tentative piece - don't recall if I was paid for that. The Cowans then asked me to write the Surplus column, which I did for 10 years plus, until WW II surplus pretty much dried up in military sales. Gear coming out of Viet Nam then was difficult to adapt to ham use. At the end they owed me a couple thousand dollars so I flew to Long Island, walked into the office (for the first and only time) and politely demanded I be paid. Which I was. Went across the street to their bank and cashed the check. Second time I had to fly to a remote city to collect a debt. The other was in San Antonio. In many years of dealing with individuals, the only time I got stiffed tor significant money was from a small company.
