Truly an inspired attempt at swords to plowshares. I wonder how many hours
the creator put into this work of Ham Art. Not a train wreck, but making
do with what's available. I am sure that someone in this august group of
command set aficionados can make an estimate of how many of the 190 to 550
KHz receivers were manufactured. It must have been in the 10s of thousands
and perhaps more given that these rascals were more than likely installed
in most aircraft be they small or large. I recall that the 190-550 KHz
radios were flown in many aircraft well into the 50s.
And judging from the ample supply of these units even today would
suggest that those that did not go down to the sea right after WWII (post war
demil) have seen safe haven in many a ham shack these past 60+ years...
most in original condition since they really had no practical value other than
to be used as an external selective IF system which most of the time
required little in the way of modifications. I too recall the articles that
used the 190-550 KHz unit as both a simple heterodyne VFO--exciter and an SSB
exciter making use of those wonderful 85 KHz IF transformers as a SSB
filter. Cool idea in my opinion even today.
