All 'command set' conversions that I've ever seen were junk after a ham
worked his magic 'improving' the device. That includes the ones that I
did in 1966 (an R-26/ARC-5 with a single-tube 5763 ECO transmitter built
on the dynamotor apron), in 1967 (a T-18/ARC-5 converted to a crystal-
controlled novice transmitter on 80m), and in 1968 (a T-23/ARC-5 that was
intended to become a 6m, 2m, and 1.25m transmitter by rewinding the coils
in the turrets). In my defense, *all* of these units were junkers that
were missing top and bottom covers before I got them. I had then a few
unmodified units that have remained that way for more than 45 years under
my ownership.
The original design and construction of a 'command set' receiver or
transmitter is pure beauty...it's breathtaking to see.
