Well, that is a complete mystery to me too: as are those who put a piece of hacked or 
deteriorated mil gear up on eBay for sale at some completely insanely ridiculous price.

My first really good receiver was a BC-348 which my Mother bought for me. This was in 
1957. She got it from a local ham, Lee Pratt, who was one of my Elmers. The only mod done 
to it was a properly built and installed AC supply. He also included a BC band ARC-5 to use 
as a "Q-5er" with it.

I later traded that back to him for a brand-new RAL-7 with power supply so I could operate on 
15 meters.

Over the past year or two, I have been watching eBay for a somewhat-hacked or "gently-
modded" BC-348 I could install here, but so far, the prices for almost all have been way out 
of my reach, and those that weren't, were so badly hacked I didn't feel I wanted them. One 
was even painted almost chartreuse with house paint. It was gawdawful.
