My R-27 with the Yardney mechanism has BIG Navy anchor stamps on the receiver and the Yardney. Also, on the Yardney, is a BIG encircled E. Not the usual small stamps. It also has an O&R sticker, "Processed by O&R NAS JAX, and the date of (from what I can make out) DEC 49. I presume NAS Jacksonville FL. Does this have any significance? The R-26 just has a BIG Navy anchor stamp on th receiver and nothing on the Yardney. These were aquired separatly, not as a set.Originally the controll connectors were on the left side of the Yardney's and I moved them both to the front position so the pair could mount in the MT-63. So these were originally intended for single autotune rx use? BTW it was not all that easy to move the connectors to the front panel position. Very tight quarters there and fitting the cover back on was a little frustrating but do-able.

I think Taigh Ramey has more info on his TwinBeech site.
That's at http://www.twinbeech.com/images/Radio/yardneyARC5/YardneyinTBM.pdf and is a terrific assessment of the system in a TBM-1C Avenger dated August 1944, warts and all.
I have an R-26 and R-27 racked up but no control boxes.I plan to rig up something, someday...
The basic switching is shown in the docs page I referenced previously. All that is actually needed for changing channels on the *receiver* is a two pole 6 position switch, so that's the good news. Taigh's pdf shows a very nice way of using such a simple solution in the photo that show the "special control box". Looks like it is mounted in a "blank" C-87 box without the holes punched into it. It must have been nice to call Collins and get such on a moment's notice... :-)
Interestingly enough, there were actually Yardney tuned R-26 and R-27 receivers that had modified nomenclature plates on them. I have an altogether too generous transfer from from AB5S that says "R-26M" on the top plate, and apparently reflects modification at a higher depot level than the field mods that form the majority of the sets.

Mike
