It occurs to me that it may be to extend or retract the R-4's antenna,
dependent on where it's located on the F4U's fuselage.  It looks to be about
the same length as the AN/ARR-2's antenna which might be located in a
position where it either might interfere with, say, a centerline bomb or
fuel tank (including the dropping thereof) or, if it's aft, with ground
operations.  

Just a thought.
