You and Michael Tauson are the winners, Wayne - I read the pub more
carefully and found this tiny paragraph 2. h (12) on page 25.
"NAVIGATION ANTENNA (See figure 30) The control for extending and
retracting this antenna is located on the right side of the cockpit,
just below the cabin track. The antenna is extended by unlatching,
pulling the handle aft, and latching. The antenna should be extended
only when actually being used, since it causes a certain definite,
though small, loss in maximum speed (one mph)."
I seem to recall the the F4U was the speed holder for a while, so they
were obviously obsessed with drag...but that little ARR-2 antenna?
Sheesh. They seem to have dropped the complexity in later versions of
the F4U, so obviously it was a performance/weight tradeoff decision.
