[ARC5] the age old battle of modify or sanctify and the Demill dilemma

That's not my point, but I still maintain that if hams in the early years  
had not bought great quantities of surplus be it hacked or just rat packed 
away,  there would be little around today to even argue about.  This is not a 
 specious argument, but a bloody fact!    I have no  problem with those 
folks who back in the day hacked up these rascals to either  use them or to 
learn about the fundamentals or radios or to glean parts for  their own 
creations.  I just get tired of all the BS condemnation of those  souls who indeed 
made the stuff work and in that process preserved much if not  all that is 
available to us today be it a pristine command set found in an  estate sale 
or a command set transmitter that had been used as the foundation  for a 
W2EWL SSB package.  For what it's worth I've preserved a number of  these old 
beasts in my collection and with that said I would not tear up a  pristine 
unit with all the other pre-converted units on hand.  But I do  admire much of 
what was created out of this stuff be it a VFO or a full fledged  SSB 
exciter.  Those were exciting times and I'll stick to my guns saying  that those 
days were the real history of this stuff from a Ham's point of  view.
