That's not my point, but I still maintain that if hams in the early years
had not bought great quantities of surplus be it hacked or just rat packed
away, there would be little around today to even argue about. This is not a
specious argument, but a bloody fact! I have no problem with those
folks who back in the day hacked up these rascals to either use them or to
learn about the fundamentals or radios or to glean parts for their own
creations. I just get tired of all the BS condemnation of those souls who indeed
made the stuff work and in that process preserved much if not all that is
available to us today be it a pristine command set found in an estate sale
or a command set transmitter that had been used as the foundation for a
W2EWL SSB package. For what it's worth I've preserved a number of these old
beasts in my collection and with that said I would not tear up a pristine
unit with all the other pre-converted units on hand. But I do admire much of
what was created out of this stuff be it a VFO or a full fledged SSB
exciter. Those were exciting times and I'll stick to my guns saying that those
days were the real history of this stuff from a Ham's point of view.
