BTW, there has been a recent series of articles in ER on a vintage SSB 
receiver and transmitter built along the same lines as your find, except that 
there is a direct frequency readout on at least one of the two. Furthermore, 
they can be connected together to form a complete 20 meter transceiver.

The author found that the rear, VFO tuning, capacitor was a far better tuning 
capacitor than either of the other two.
