To clean off a solder joint before desoldering, I use a small soldering aid 
(those things with a hexagonal wood handle in the middle and various type 
tips) and/or small screwdriver (the screwdriver has sharper edges).  Another 
method is to first heat the joint with an (easily cleaned) soldering iron.  
Then a small stainless brush will usually remove the residue.
